Correct spelling, explanation: in Middle English written was actually pronounced /writ ten/ (like two separate words and with both t’s pronounced). Throughout the years’ pronunciation changed to just one t heard, however, spelling remained. Notice, that if you try to say written very slowly you will pronounce both t’s. Writen is the wrong form since it has just one t.
Definition of written:
verb, past participle form of write; to put letters or other characters in order to communicate
I’ve written two books so far in my life.
adjective, expressed in writing
You have to apply for the course in written form.
Incorrect spelling, explanation: this form is a misspelling because there should be double t – written, as in Middle English origin. In ME this word was actually pronounced with both t’s, hence the spelling. Writen is therefore a wrong spelling.
