I agree that octagon (not octogon) is the correct spelling, coming from Greek “ΟΚΤΑΓΩΝΟΝ”
But why is octopus not spelled octapus, since it’s derived from also Greek “ΟΚΤΑΠΟΥΣ”. Both Greek compound words share the first part “ΟΚΤΩ” (eight), but the omega at the end turns into an alpha in the compound word, much like the epsilon in “ΠΕΝΤΕ” turns into an alpha in “ΠΕΝΤΑΓΩΝΟΝ” (pentagon). So why octopus? I found references that it’s derived from “ΟΚΤΩΠΟΥΣ”, but I’ve always seen it as “ΟΚΤΑΠΟΥΣ”. Thoughts?
